A Growing Town, a Growing Vision

After the Second World War, Haywards Heath began to transform—from a quiet market town into a busy commuter hub and a key administrative centre for the region. As new families arrived and the town expanded, a sense of spiritual hunger grew too.

In the mid 1970s, Christians began gathering in the local hospital to pray. They dreamed of a Baptist church that could serve this growing community. God was stirring something new.

Humble Beginnings

On 8th January 1978, the first public gathering of Haywards Heath Baptist Church (HHBC) took place. By that summer, the church was officially welcomed into the Baptist Union family.

In 1981, we called our first minister, Ken Jefferson. Under his leadership, services were held at the Albermarle Centre until 1987. After a long interregnum, Graham Watts joined as minister in 1991.

A New Home and Growing Ministry

During Graham’s time, the church moved into the old Methodist chapel on Sussex Road—the very site we still call home today. It was a season of new beginnings: some of the ministries we know and love today were planted in those years.

When Graham moved on in 2003, the church was bursting at the seams. Soon after, a new congregation was launched at Harlands to accommodate the growing numbers.

One Church, One Home

Twelve years later, under the leadership of our newly appointed Lead Pastor, Chris Norden, the two congregations came together again—united by a fresh vision to establish a purpose-built space for worship and community.

That vision became reality in 2018, when our home on Sussex Road opened its doors. It has been a place of prayer, laughter, learning, and life ever since.

The Story Continues

Chris led us through exciting developments—and the challenges of the COVID years—with grace and vision. When he moved on in 2022, the church didn’t slow down.

Our midweek ministries have flourished. The building is buzzing with life nearly every day. Sunday services are vibrant and full of hope.

In 2024, Dan and Em Tyler joined us, bringing fresh energy and passion. New dreams are stirring, new plans are forming—and the future of HHBC looks brighter than ever.

This story is still being written. The question is: what part will you play?
